The problem

The introduction of PSD2 required European banks to open access to certain banking services through APIs. For many banks, this was primarily a regulatory compliance exercise.

But providing APIs alone wasn't enough to create a useful developer experience. Developers needed accessible documentation, straightforward onboarding, reliable testing tools, and an easy way to understand what they could build.

Without these, integrating banking services remained unnecessarily difficult, limiting innovation and the opportunities for collaboration between banks and fintech companies.

The solution

At Nordea, we saw PSD2 as an opportunity to do more than meet regulatory requirements. We wanted to build a developer platform that would make Nordea a preferred partner for fintech companies and developers.

As Product Owner, I worked across the Developer Portal and Go-to-Market initiatives to create an accessible, developer-friendly API platform.

A central part of our approach was building a community of developers and fintech companies, involving them directly in the product development process. Their feedback helped us understand integration challenges, identify opportunities, and continuously improve the platform.

Rather than treating Open Banking as a regulatory obligation, we approached it as an opportunity to create an ecosystem where external developers could build innovative financial products using Nordea's services.
