(open larger view)The problem
I've been fascinated by sumo for years and have attended numerous tournaments in Japan.
Despite sumo's incredible history and wealth of statistical records, finding and exploring information about the sport can be frustrating. Some of the most comprehensive resources are in Japanese, while others have dense, outdated interfaces that make navigating the data unnecessarily difficult.
And while traditional statistics tell you who's winning, they don't always help you understand how a wrestler actually fights.
Is a wrestler a grappler or a pusher? Do they rely on a few signature techniques or have a varied arsenal? Which opponents do they consistently beat, and who gives them trouble?
I wanted to make it easier to explore these questions.
(open larger view)The solution
I created SumoBase, a modern platform for exploring sumo wrestlers, tournament results, rankings, and performance statistics.
Beyond conventional win-loss records, SumoBase helps fans understand wrestlers' fighting styles and tendencies through their winning techniques, technical versatility, and head-to-head performance.
Users can discover whether a wrestler primarily relies on pushing or grappling techniques, how varied their approach is, and which opponents they perform particularly well or poorly against.
By bringing historical data and deeper analysis together in an intuitive interface, SumoBase makes it easier for both longtime fans and newcomers to explore the sport.
It's a way to understand not just who wins, but what makes each wrestler unique.
